Punched lanterns such as this started to be produced as early as the mid-1400’s when tinplate was first being produced. Produced by some American tin shops as late as the 1870’s. Tin shops here in America were quick to start producing them, though popular in todays mind set weren’t as common as many think. Used to give enough light to see where one goes, and speculated by some to simply transport light.
